THE KARMA CONNECTION

One day, Dada J was called to address a huge gathering in Mumbai. He was traveling by car. On the way, he saw an injured old man, neglected and left on the side of the road to die. The many passing cars simply whizzed by, ignoring the suffering man. Dada J requested his driver to stop the car. Despite helping the ailing man, he and his many concerned followers could not find a hospital, clinic or medical center that would take him in. The homeless man had no registered address, and no doctor or medical staff would help. Eventually, the man was admitted to a hospital after a devotee volunteered to give his own home address.

After that sad incident, Dada J vowed that the Sadhu Vaswani Mission would build a hospital where the sick, ailing and suffering, even the poorest of people, would be cared for. With the help and contributions of many, he was able to fulfil his dream of establishing not just one hospital, but many other medical services.

In 1989, the Inlaks and Budhrani Hospital in Pune was formally opened to treat not just the rich but the poor as well. The hospital was inaugurated by Nobel Laureate Mother Theresa. The Sadhu Vaswani Mission’s medical facilities expanded to include specialist facilities for cancer, eye treatments and cardiac care facilities. Most of the work continued to be funded by well-wishers from around the world.

Dada J would often say, “Do as much good as you can, to as many as you can, in as many ways as you can, as often as you can."

Simplifying Karma

Every facet of life is karma-related. The karma of yesterday becomes the destiny of today. The karma of today will become the destiny of tomorrow. If one wants to improve one’s destiny, then one must put forth one’s best efforts.

At a gathering, a woman raised a question: “Dada, I have read many books on karma, but the more I read, the more confused I become. I don’t understand karma, Dada, please explain."

“The law of karma, according to Sadhu Vaswani, is referred to as the law of the seed. If you sow mangoes you will reap mangoes, if you sow thorns you will reap thorns. Man is given free will; he’s given the right of choice. He can choose between what the Upanishads call preya and shreya. Preya is the pleasant: the path of preya is the path of quick gratification that lures us but leads to our degradation. Basically, the seed you sow today will bear fruit eventually, which means we will have to face the consequences of our own actions. The fruit may be sour or sweet, but we have to eat them. Shreya is the good: the path of shreya may, at first, be difficult to tread; it requires discipline, control of the senses, but ultimately leads to our betterment, wellbeing and spiritual unfolding. At every step, man is given this choice. Many of us, alas, choose the easy path – the path of pleasure – and so keep on multiplying undesirable karma.
